Best Purchases of 2021

My favorite buys of the year

  • What It Is: Humidifier/Diffuser
  • How Much It Costs: $44.95
  • Why It’s Awesome: Growing up in the Lowcountry, humidifiers were completely unnecessary due to the extremely humid climate. It took me many many winters in NYC before I realized that a tiny appliance would do wonders for my dry hands and face. I chose this specific one after seeing several good reviews. Also, the aesthetic was right for our bedroom, and if this is going to sit on your nightstand all the time, it should look good! It’s technically a diffuser for aromatherapy, but I skip the essential oils and just fill it with water to achieve the same results as a humidifier.
  • What It Is: Sweater shaver
  • How Much It Costs: $12
  • Why It’s Awesome: This little gadget has saved so many sweaters and shorts. When they get pilly, simply run this guy over the fabric and presto – like new! So often, my sweaters were still in good condition (not stretched out, still in style) but when they got pilled they looked sloppy. It seemed a shame to throw them out/donate them and now I don’t have to.
  • What It Is: Synera patches (aka prescription lidocaine numbing patches)
  • How Much It Costs: up to $300/box (but I got mine for ~$100/box – it’s worth looking for coupons)
  • Why It’s Awesome: IVF is generally pretty awful, both emotionally and physically. The process is painful and people don’t talk about that enough. One of the many injections you have to do is progesterone and unlike the others, this one goes straight into the muscle and hurts…a lot. Thankfully, a girl I follow on Instagram detailed her IVF journey after the fact and talked about using prescription numbing patches so I decided to request them from my doctor. I am awful with needles. These patches are magic and made the process much better. If you have to go through IVF (and, honestly, I hope you don’t) and are not good with needles, get these. They are worth every single penny.
  • What It Is: Bodycon Dresses (tshirt or ribbed fabric)
  • How Much It Costs: I bought one for $45 (Via Moda via Bloomingdales on sale) but several (like this) for under $30 on Amazon.
  • Why It’s Awesome: Once I was ready to dress in a way that showed off my bump, a friend pointed me in the direction of Amazon. These are the kind of dresses that would normally hide nothing and be terrible after a large meal…but when you’re supposed to have a belly, they’re ideal. They’re way cheaper than investing in maternity clothes and can be layered so they were perfect for several seasons. Also, I found dresses to be way more comfortable than pants during pregnancy.
  • What It Is: Elfa Design Closet System
  • How Much It Costs: $1,350
  • Why It’s Awesome: We had a pretty large closet in the guest bedroom but never used it efficiently. It’s where everything went to die. There were holiday decorations, blankets, golf clubs, coolers, a vacuum. These are all things we need to store, but by throwing it all in there with zero organization, we weren’t maximizing the space at all. By putting in a true system we can now store soooo much more in there and easily access everything we need.
  • What It Is: Water Bottle
  • How Much It Costs: $9.99
  • Why It’s Awesome: I am notoriously bad at drinking water. (It’s been a New Year’s Resolution for the last…too many years.) This water bottle is small enough to carry around and has enough manageable markers to keep me motivated. I’m finally getting in my 64 oz. more often than not. (Or at least more often than I used to.)
  • What It Is: 10Q
  • How Much It Costs: Free
  • Why It’s Awesome: This is ideal for people who want to be journalers but can never seem to keep up with a journal. It’s only 10 days so it’s a low, short-term investment and it’s all done as responses to prompts so you can focus yourself. Each day offers an opportunity for introspection and you can complete the challenge annually so you can see how your responses change each year.
  • What It Is: Cook This Book
  • How Much It Costs: $20
  • Why It’s Awesome: This is the best cookbook I’ve purchased all year (and maybe top 3 of all time?). First of all, I know it’s good because I couldn’t dog ear any of the pages…because then they’d all be dog eared. Secondly, I love how it’s structured with the home cook in mind. The recipe itself includes specific quantities; however, the ingredient list is written out based on how you would buy the items in the grocery store. For example, the procedure part of the recipe will say 1 tbsp lemon juice but the ingredient list will say 1 lemon since you don’t wander the produce aisle looking for actual lemon juice.
  • What It Is: Rothy‚Äôs Lace-ups
  • How Much It Costs: $165
  • Why It’s Awesome: A few years ago, my parents gave me a Rothy’s gift card for my bday and I loved my loafers so much that they just did the same thing this year. This go round, I mixed it up and got the lace-ups in mint. While I recommend sizing up a half size, these are so comfortable and very versatile. For the first time ever I paired what are essentially tennis shoes with dresses and loved the look. They work with shorts, pants…everything. And like all Rothy’s, they’re machine washable.
  • What It Is: Rare Beauty Liquid Blush (color: Bliss)
  • How Much It Costs: $20
  • Why It’s Awesome: I used this product every day and it lasted about 5 months so you’re definitely getting some bang for your buck. It’s lightweight and gives you just the right amount of flush on your cheeks. It’s also nice and buildable. After applying, I layer a creamy highligher stick (currently using MILK, previously used Glossier) and it’s a perfect combo.
