Mirepoix

Big week over here! More details below, but I want to first acknowledge the dichotomy of this week in particular. On Monday, we commemorated the 22nd anniversary of the 9/11 terrorist attacks. It is a somber moment yet one that is filled with remembrance, reflection, and hope, all themes of the high holiday season, which begins this Friday evening with Rosh Hashanah. While I know most of my readers don’t celebrate, you don’t need to be Jewish to recognize the importance of taking a moment to wipe the slate clean, start fresh, and approach the future with hope.

The biggest thing this week is that I started a new job! I did not expect to leave my job after only 10 months and can only say wonderful things about my time there; however, when an opportunity to move back to the brand side (my ultimate and longer term career goal) fell into my lap, I had to take advantage. It’s incredibly nervewracking to have this level of responsibility, but it’s also extremely exciting. I can’t wait to see where this will take me. The new job is 100% remote, which is a big change of pace, so I’m trying to make my little desk area feel special and working to establish routines that truly designate the work day (“commuting” time with coffee and a book, leaving the house at least once a week to work from a coffee shop, etc.).

I ran the 5th Avenue Mile race on Sunday and was super pleased with my time. I shaved 12 seconds off my time for a final of 7:01. This is my second year doing this race and it’s one I really love. Starting at The Met is just so special and with a short distance, it’s pure fun. I definitely want to do it again next year.

The final big thing for the week: I got another tattoo! Yowza! I’ve wanted to add to one of my tattoos (a tiny one on my hip with the street numbers of the most important places I’ve lived) since moving into our apartment over 5 years ago. But since many studios (like the one I’m partial to) have spend minimums, I wanted to wait until I had another one in mind so I wasn’t spending hundreds of dollars on the teeniest of tats. I knew the next tattoo I wanted from the moment I was pregnant with Finn. Since my son is the 5th, we’ve referred to him as V since he was in my belly. Having him marks my most drastic life change and I wanted to honor that. A “V” typewriter key felt perfect – it’s a nod to my love of writing and old school things and is a sweet callback to the cufflinks I gave my husband on our wedding day. While it would have been nice to go back to the artist who did my first three tattoos, he has since moved to a new studio and does a ton of celebrities so, frankly, I could no longer afford him. I still love the original studio, West 4 Tatto, as they specialize in the style I like so I was confident they could do whatever I had in mind. Between having to wait til I was done breastfeeding, life getting crazy, and the studio always being booked, this tat got seriously delayed. But on Friday, I happened to be walking past the studio and they miraculously had an opening. What’s more, the available artist happened to have taken over my previous artist’s exact chair. It was meant to be. I pulled up the inspiration images I had saved on my phone and Alê did an incredible job with the shading, delivering the exact vintage vibe I wanted. Like my others, this tattoo is mostly hidden – something special for me.
