Mirepoix

This week is all about getting out and experiencing things. I’m making sure to leave the apartment to run errands. And when I have no errands? I’m taking my laptop or a book down to the courtyard so I can have some mid-day sunshine. But the big experience is coming this weekend when I’m heading upstate for a weekend with girlfriends. I was told it would be very chill with lots of games, booze, comfy clothes, and snacks. Ummm OKAY! Since Finn is much more mobile, I’m just doing minimal prep by making sure the apartment is stocked with snacks and there’s suggested activities to keep in the back pocket. Otherwise, I’m pretty sure my Alberts are all set for a boys weekend.

We had planned to head to Connecticut to spend time with SIL/BIL/kids, but they ended up being unable to hang at the last minute. It would have been a shame to let the rental car go to waste so once Finn finished soccer we drove ourself to Queens for the zoo. There is so much to do in this area of Queens – the next door Hall of Science is spectacular – but we could only squeeze in one activity before naptime. While larger in area, the zoo felt a bit more “rinky dink” than the Central Park Zoo (which people tend to hate on, but we absolutely love). There aren’t a ton of animals but it was just the right size for a toddler to take it all in. He loveddd the petting zoo area and the price can’t be beat. (Children two and under are free; adults are $9.95 each.) Our adventure took care of the whole first half of the day so I’m very happy we made the decision to get up and go.

On Saturday night we had a fun dub date with Shawn and Kathleen. We didn’t do anything groundbreaking (dinner and a local bar in the Bronx), but it was just an all around fab time with some pretty perfect french fries. The blurriness of this photo says it all.

I love a good seder, but Passover is not my favorite holiday. The 8 days seem to just drag on and by the end I’m ready to jump out of my skin due to cravings. Giving up bread is one thing, but the inability to mix meat and dairy is the real killer for me. (While I don’t keep kosher at all the other 357 days of the year, it feels weird to eat blatantly non-kosher foods while observing the extra kosher for Passover rules so for this long week I do it all.) It’s tradition to break Passover with pizza and I look forward to it like crazy. I break all the rules: it’s bread, the toppings have pork, I’m mixing meat and cheese – the first bite is EVERYTHING.
