Sendo

Next to a bodega, beneath some scaffolding on 6th Ave, you’ll find a nondescript door that opens into an even more nondescript staircase. If you’ve lived in NYC for any time, you’ve likely followed a similar path to get your nails done once or twice. This time, however, there’s a simple door with no signage on the second floor. You’re not even sure if it’s the second floor – it’s just a little landing. But behind that simple door is Sendo, a new sushi counter churning out delicious and affordable sushi.

You can order à la carte, but take advantage of the fact that they’ve perfected the speedy lunch with their sets. I went with the Hokkaido, which got me 9 pieces of ngiri, 3 handrolls, and 1 kaisendon. Everything was delicious and the mini kaisendon just made me want more. I might have to go back for the large sendo don, which is sea bass, hamachi, king salmon, sea bream, scallop, pickled radish, uni, and ikura.

One of the reasons I enjoyed the kaisendon so much was the ikura. It was bright and not too fishy. Apparently they use their own marinade, and I can tell it made a difference. When it comes to the nigiri, the mackeral was a standout.

The sushi was fresh and the chef was pleasant. I was their on their 6th day of service, but they seem to have worked out the kinks. I’m sure once the world knows about this gem it’ll be packed…and I’ll be a wee bit sad.
