Hutch + Waldo

Apparently my recent UES strolls were in the late afternoon when Hutch + Waldo was closing shop. But when I needed a little extra caffeine before V’s swim lesson I realized morningtime was probably a better time to stop by. Aaaad yup mornings are hoppin at this little coffee window (which, don’t worry, has solid sidewalk seating).

There are three locations but they are far from identical and take design cues from the surroundings and original tenants. The UES one is a refurbished 1950s auto garage; in Gramercy, plenty of wicker and sage tones evoke the serenety of the park in a former horse stable; downtown offers the chill that comes with the waterfront views.

Outside of the monkey bread (a delish treat), I haven’t tried any of the food but the menu is filled with Aussie goodness. Oh did I not mention this is an Australian spot? We know they take their coffee and fast casual meals seriously in Oz. Of course there’s an avocado toast and quinoa bowl, but there are also tasty breakfast (and non-breakfast sandwiches) with condiments like roast tomato chutney to take your hangover meal up a notch. I really enjoyed my hot coffee, but I absolutely loved my perky nana seasonal special. I’ve only ever seen banana in smoothies, but it turns out it’s a great flavor in a coffee. That said, if you’re looking for a smoothie or detox juice, they’ve got you covered. Overall, I loved this place a latte. (Sorry, had to.)
