Maya was making quite the name for herself in the cutthroat world of DC politics until her husband had an affair and now she’s the one with the ruined reputation. Sigh, to be a woman. She’s in the process of removing the stain of her husband’s scandal from her resume when she gets an interesting email. The lead singer from her favorite band as a teen (and the object of her first big crush) is looking to make a comeback and thinks her work as a top political strategist makes her perfectly skilled to orchestrate it. Turns out they have overlapping interests and could…maybe…actually…work as a couple?
I love that you really could read this novella in a single sitting so it truly scratches that romcom itch, just as if you’d opened up Netflix. Though short, it managed to pack in plenty of conflict, resolution, and growth. The one thing I didn’t love was how immediately comfortable Maya was with Charlie. Perhaps it was because the book had to remain short, but it felt unrealistic that anyone would be so bold to give someone shit in their very first exchanges, especially if it’s under the guise of potentially building a professional relationship. That aside, it felt like a condensed version of Romantic Comedy; in other words, a fun romp.
4 out of 5 stars.
