Book Review: The Fake

When Shelby meets Cammie in a grief group, she finally starts loving again. The two women trauma bond and when Cammie shares that she’s going through a rough patch, Shelby swoops in to mother the seemingly broken bird. At the same time, Gibson meets Cammie at a bar and throws himself into a mind-blowing-sex-filled romance that is finally helping him emerge from his divorce. Eventually, Shelby and Gibson start noticing things seem off with Cammie…and when they meet each other, they become sure of it. Are they able to unravel themselves from Cammie’s con before they’re fully damaged?

Cammie’s actions are wrong – no doubt about it….and yet, Shelby and Gibson seem happier and healthier (albeit poorer) because of it. For all her harm, she may have actually helped these two sad sacks. As someone who abides by the rules and is extremely bothered when people are rewarded for breaking them, I was livid on behalf of Shelby and Gibson. But I couldn’t ignore that they seemed better, which means the author, Zoe Whittall, did a great job getting me to look deeper at human nature and ethics.

4 out of 5 stars.
