Book Review: Black Friend: Essays

There is no right way to answer the question “how many black friends do you have?”…and yet so many people have the same weird response. Simply watching people attempt to answer makes you uncomfy – and that’s the point. These awkward situations allow us to assess our country’s media/workplace/educational landscape and what it’s like to navigate these spaces as a Black woman. And it’s super funny.

I love Ziwe’s direct approach. As she questions celebrities on her show about their racist tendencies, exposing thoughts they didn’t even realize they had, she revels in their discomfort. I, too, love watching them squirm and appreciated my own cringing reaction as I assessed my own thoughts and actions while reading this book. That’s why I love that each chapter begins with one of these cringey interviews.
