Saeris Fane is surviving her depressed desert city by stealing, and it’s working out fine…until she steals from the wrong person and gets herself caught. After she’s arrested and en route to her execution, she pulls a sword out of the ground and is plummeted through a magic portal to the fae realm. Once there, they realize she is an alchemist, able to manipulate quicksilver which can be used to create portals and forge weapons imbued with magic. Now, the fae, and their powerful warrior, Kingfisher need Saeris and the tension is tension-ing.
When it comes to romantasy, fated mates is a favorite trope so I was on board from the jump. We love a broody, morally gray MMC and this one is broodiest and grayest. Some of the world building gets a bit convoluted (the quicksilver portal battle in the beginning is a bit confusing) , but push through because the characters are interesting and the the world building of the fae culture is solid. If you’re looking for magic and spice, this one will hook you.
