Book Review: Set Piece

Jack Felgate is brand new to stardom so he’s not jaded by the swarm of fans who bombard him at a bar, nor does he think he’s too good for “normal girl” CJ who rescues him from his rabid fans while she tends bar. CJ is not in a place where she can handle more than a one night stand so they have one great night…until Jack shows up to set to star in a new Great Gatsby adaptation and discovers CJ is the production designer. It’s been five years and they’re both in wildly different places than they were when they first met. CJ is a busy single mom to a precocious toddler and Jack is a mega star. They’re pulled to each other like magnets, but CJ has gotten herself into a groove and a relationship would complicate things. Can she deal with complicated?

I’m not typically a second chance romance gal, but I enjoyed this one for a couple reasons. First, it wasn’t a breakup; there was no animosity. They were both in the same place on the first go-round, not looking for a relationship, so it wasn’t some big deal “first chance.” More importantly, it’s not a lot of back and forth and lack of communication. In fact, these characters know exactly what they want and that’s refreshing – I even found it charming to see people so sure of themselves. Maybe it’s where I’m at in my life and career, but I like seeing characters who aren’t messing around (but are still fun and witty).

3.75 out of 5 stars.
