As the daughter of an infamous terrorist, Maeve Abenthy has been hiding her identity. She is content to slither through life until she receives a letter through the magic-laden postal system that says her father was innocent. In order to uncover who sent the letter and the truth about her father, she must infiltrate the Otherwhere Post as a scriptomancy apprentice. Scriptomancy is the art of imbuing a letter with magic so the words come alive in fanciful and even dangerous ways. Only trained couriers can transport these magical letters across worlds. She is soon paired with a mentor, Tristan, whose potential as a master in the art of scriptomancy has made him a target of relentless training and nearly unachievable expectations. As one of the most powerful scriptomancers, he recognizes the power brimming under Maeve’s skin and together, they work to right the wrongs and correct the lies of years ago.
This is a great, new magic system – as a lover of the written word, it was beautiful seeing a whole world built around writing in a deeper way than Divine Rivals. My biggest qualm is that there were some elements of this world that needed to be clarified a bit. There was some overlap between the factions of the Otherwhere Post, some confusion as to why normal people can’t travel between worlds, and even what exactly happened with “the doors.” Because I was slightly confused while reading, it took me out of it a bit, but overall I enjoyed this fantastical world enough to overlook it.
