I can’t NOT read something tied to the Hunger Games. In this prequel, we observe the second Quarter Quell, which will claim double the tributes from each district. This is where we learn what made Haymitch the broken man we encounter in the very first Hunger Games novel. His backstory better explains the covey community and the early desire for a resistance movement.
The beginning felt a smidge cheesy – Haymitch came off as a bit gee willakers with all the “my gal” language. But once training for the games begins, the writing – just like the stakes – gets more serious. Thee way to do a prequel is to add value and explanation that enhances the original work, and this nails it.
4.5 out of 5 stars.
