Book Review: The Book of Essie

Imagine the Kardashians if they were squeaky clean and super religious, and we watch the most intimate moments of their lives play out season after season.  That’s what the Hicks are in The Book of Essie.  For decades, the world has watched Pastor Hicks, his wife Celia, and their six children on the Six for Hicks reality show.

While the rest of the world may not realize it, everyone in the Hicks family knows that Celia pulls the strings and every moment is a calculated PR move. Nothing happens in this family without Mother knowing.  But youngest daughter Essie has found herself pregnant and has decided it’s time she takes things into her own hands…and bring the entire enterprise down.

I sped through this book.  I couldn’t get enough.  I enjoyed that it wasn’t a thriller but still felt juicy.  I was rooting for Essie every step of the way and liked seeing such sensational moments somehow represented as realistic.

4.5 out of 5 stars.
