Just like your favorite rom-com, this book starts with a long car ride home from college. Poppy and Alex have nothing in common other than their tiny hometown. He drives at precisely the speed limit and she avoids rules, but by the end of the road trip, they’ve bonded. They have the sort of heterosexual male/female platonic relationship nobody believes can exist – and they continuously put it to the test on their annual Summer Trip. Each vacation – from New Orleans to Norway – has affirmed their best friendship…until the trip two years ago. Something happened in Croatia and Poppy has lost her best friend. Now she’s working at her dream job in NYC with great friends and a nice apartment but she’s just not happy and knows it’s because she’s missing Alex. Determined to make it right, she plans a hail mary Summer Trip to Palm Springs and invites Alex. It’s time to be honest with themselves and each other.
Emily Henry’s Beach Read was my charming rom com surprise so when her latest book was released, I jumped right on board. While I didn’t love it quite as much as Beach Read, People We Meet on Vacation was a delight. Just like When Harry Met Sally, you know how this is going to end. There will be playful frustration, there will be a questioning of feelings, and – of course – there will be a big romantic speech at the end. It’s a great poolside read so grab it now for your own Summer Trip.
4 out of 5 stars.
