Book Review: Honor

I find it hard to critique cultural observances, particularly those that don’t belong to my own culture – it’s not my place. However, I feel safe in saying honor killings are morally wrong and entirely unacceptable. Indian American journalist Smita feels the same way and has returned to her native country to report the story of Meena, a Hindu woman whose brothers tried to murder her for marrying a Muslim man (who did not survive). Meena and her young daughter have found themselves as outcasts of both the Hindu and Muslim communities. Smita wants to help them find their way just as she once did, but how much of her cause is pushed by her own guilt?

I was a big fan of Thrity Umrigar’ The Space Between Us and found this novel, also about two women who connect despite drastically different social circumstances, just as compelling. While I understand how finding comfort through another connection helps Smita on her journey of self acceptance, I didn’t find her romance with Mohan to be vital to the story. Rather, their affair (and the lead up) was necessary for Smita’s character development, but it tied up a bit too nicely at the end (and why I detracted a star).

4 out of 5 stars.
