This novel is a fictionalized account of the creation and snowball effect of the @deuxmoi IG account. Cricket Lopez is working a thankless job as the assistant to a major celeb stylist who seems hell bent on making her life miserable. In a drunk fit when she’s just over it, she reinvigorates her old Instagram handle with a post requesting any juicy celebrity gossip. The account takes off and suddenly Cricket is leading a double life as the anonymous “reporter” behind everyone’s new favorite rumor mill. The account begins taking over her life – coming between her and her real job, her friendships, and even a potential love interest.
I give them credit for capitalizing on the overnight success. Deuxmoix is now a book, a podcast, a merch store, and [soon] an HBO show. Good for them. I just found it a little hard to root for Cricket now that we know the real Deuxmoi‘s identity. Maybe it’s because some of that excitement is gone; maybe it’s because one half of the duo is the granddaughter of a famed socialite and it just feels like the whole thing is the product of wealthy, white, entitled girls running around doing what wealthy, white, entitled girls do. We’re not talking about an underdog story, here. If you want something light, quick, and gossipy, this is it. If you ever went out dancing til 2am on a Wednesday night before dragging yourself into the office, this is the nostalgia you’re looking for.
3 out of 5 stars.
