Book Review: New Teeth

My child may be 2, but I still feel like a new parent, which is why this collection of short stories all struck a chord with me. No two stories are the same, just like no two days as a parent (or a child) are the same. Simon Rich is a former SNL writer and each story reads almost like a sketch. There’s the baby detective trying to help his baby sister solve the crime of a missing stuffed animal, the oversize monkey superhero who doesn’t know how to ease into retirement, a girl who was actually raised by wolves, the pirates who learn responsibility from a pint sized stowaway, and a gee wilakers version of Babe Ruth. Each tale is a bit off the wall and we love it. Somehow that captures exactly what it’s like to be a parent: at the mercy of a tiny terrorist while also blinking and realizing that both you and they have grown up.
