Sushi 35 West

When it comes to hidden gems and sushi deals, no restaurant has crossed my radar more than Sushi 35 West. Tucked away in Midtown (just around the corner from Penn Station), you’ll go in through a smoke shop and walk up a flight of dingy stairs. Once you get to the top, there’s nothing more than a window, a trash can, and 3 or 4 bistro tables. I arrived just in time to score one of the few chairs (which is good because I didn’t have an office to take the takeout to nor was it warm enough to find a park bench and eat outside). I showed up just before 1pm and within 5 minutes, it was bumpin.

The regular [lunch] sushi set is 6 pieces of nigiri + one [6 piece] tuna roll – and it comes with a salad. For $22, that’s a steal. I knew I was hungry so I also ordered myself a spicy scallop roll. (I also like to get this because it might be my favorite roll when done right so I use it as a rubric of sorts when trying new sushi spots.) The roll was also 6 pieces and cost $11, bringing my total with tip to under $40.

The quality was, indeed, fabulous, and I can’t forget about the most-definitely-fresh salad dressing. The people have spoken and they were correct: this is a gem of a sushi restaurant.
