When you think of buddy cop stories, this is not what you picture. But here we are, at the Kamogawa Diner, where Koishi Kamogawa and her father Nagare are food detectives. Customers come to their restaurant looking to recreate a meal – and a memory – from their youth. The detectives are able to pick out clues from their customers’ stories and transport them back to a meaningful time in their lives and answer the lingering questions trapped in the meals.
If you liked Before the Coffee Gets Cold and looking for a cozy, single-day read, this is absolutely for you. Packed with nostalgia, it is as comforting as a steaming bowl of the very soup Nagare recreates for one of his clients. I think I may prefer it to the aforementioned coffee series because, food.
3.5 out of 5 stars. (Don’t look at this as a low rating – it was really lovely; it just didn’t change my life. And there’s something to be said for single-sitting reads.)
