Book Review: I Shouldn’t Be Telling You This [But I’m Going to Anyway]

Chelsea Devantez is a strong woman, which is because she has been influenced by other strong women. It might not have been easy – I think it’s fair to say her childhood was turbulent – but she is now a fierce advocate for herself and other women who knows how to put someone in their place. She has found success in Hollywood and on the way has come to figure out the friendship recipe: cut out those who don’t give you the space to explore your truest self and hold on for dear life to the ones who set boundaries. In this collection of essays, each dedicated to a woman – from her godmother to her therapist – who helped shape her, Devantez is open (perhaps more than we deserve) and biting.

I became familiar with Devantez through her podcast, now called Glamorous Trash, where she reviews female celebrity memoirs and how they crush our souls (in both good and bad ways). It quickly became a favorite show and I was thrilled she was willing to subject herself to the same scrutiny. I was laughing and fired up in equal measure.

4.25 out of 5 stars.
