I was devastated when my favorite neighborhood wine bar, Terroir, closed. I almost boycotted the restaurant that replaced it, in a move of solidarity. But then I realized that would be silly because then I would be denying myself delicious food – delicious food that has spent all day getting nice and juicy on a rotisserie.
At Broken Spoke, you get your choice of chicken, short ribs, or pork bell, all of which have been slowly turning on a spit so they soak up the flavor of the seasoning and its own natural juices. There’s also the beast of the week, which last week was beef. The meat comes out with some slaw, chimichurri-type sauce, and mini tortillas. We got the chicken because when you think rotisserie, you think chicken. But I was happy enough with everything I tried that I’ll soon be back to see how well they prepare the other meats on the menu. I took advantage of the fixins that came with it, making myself some mini tacos, but Albert preferred to eat his Amish chicken on his own because he wanted to just enjoy it’s flavor without any distractions.
In addition to the chicken, we ordered ribs with a pineapple habanero jelly sauce, potato wedges with aioli, mac and cheese (which had a nice smoky chili flavor), and [my favorite side] the sauteed chard with peanuts. All the toughness was cooked out of the chard and it had a nice salty smoky flavor, a bit milder than its sibling, collard greens, with whom I’m more familiar.
The meat may be the reason to walk into Broken Spoke, but the sides, with their Latin flair, certainly boost the overall meal. Nor does it hurt to wash it down with one of their cocktails, like the pear vanilla vanilla old fashioned. After 3 beers, one cocktail, and all the food mentioned above, our bill came to $100, including tax and tip (and we took home leftovers) – not bad for a date night.
