PSA: Oktoberfest Boat Cruise to Bear Mountain

Sometimes I think there’s a place you’ve just got to know about and my Public Service Announcements (PSAs) will give you the full skinny.

Major points to Albert who found this Oktoberfest boat cruise to Bear Mountain.  It was the PERFECT Fall activity.  Basically, you take a 2.5 hour cruise up the Hudson, mess around Bear Mountain for three hours, and then cruise back for another 2.5 hours.  Two and a half hours may sound like a long time, but it passed quickly.

The area is lovely, so I was content just looking to the side of the boat.  There was someone on the mike sharing information about the areas we passed, but it was difficult to hear where we were sitting, and I was just content to be on the river.  If you’re looking for a little more action, there is a $35 all you can drink beer special.  People took advantage beginning at 9 am and were feeling nice and loose by the time they got to the mountain.  I just sat, chatted with my beau, and listened to the brass band on board.

I had decided I needed to spend all of Saturday and Sunday kind of detoxing and I didn’t want any booze to get in the way of the hike I had planned.  Those who were drinking were planning to chill by the lake and in the lodge, but I had peaks to climb!  I never get to the mountains so I really wanted to take advantage of the opportunity and cross something off my Fall bucket list.

I don’t know what trail we hiked; we just started hiking.  It was beautiful.  The foliage was in full swing with all those beautiful gold and amber colors.  We hiked up for about 1.25 miles before it was time to head back down to grab a quick lunch and get back on the boat.  This was definitely a fun way to get a workout in!  I also liked that now I can say I’ve hiked the very top and very bottom of the Appalachian Trail.

I highly recommend taking advantage of this boat/hike combo.  Even if you don’t want to hike, it’s still a full day of activity.  The food and drink specials are extra, but $60 will get you the boat ride and hiking – not too shabby, especially if you pack your own lunch.
