3 on Thursday

It’s been an interesting week. Yesterday marked two weeks since my whole company was laid off and it happened at a strange time. Right after we received the news, my beau and I headed across the country for a wedding. Then we had our big housewarming party to prepare. And now it’s the last couple days before Labor Day, which means our industry is all but shut down. The circumstances make it feel like a long, busy vacation…except I would rather just have a job. Hopefully the market will pick up soon, but in the meantime, I’m reflecting on all the wonderful people I have in my life during what is a trying time.

Exactly one week ago, I was sitting in the coffee shop sending out job applications when I got a text from Liz saying she had something she thought would cheer me up. Next thing I knew, she texted me a copy of her train ticket and said she’d be arriving the following night. I had been bummed when I knew she couldn’t attend our housewarming because she already had a bday party to go to, but knew she had important plans. I was speechless when she dropped everything to come from DC to be with me for the party.

It didn’t stop with Liz. When Karina walked into the party, she said she had a surprise for me. All of a sudden, Matt, who was supposed to be in North Carolina for a bachelor party, walked in the door. I am so unbelievably lucky to have such thoughtful friends. I hope I am the kind of friend who will do this for them when they’re going through a difficult time.

For my birthday, my parents gifted me a trip to DreamDry for a fun ‘do. Even back in June, I knew we’d be hosting a themed housewarming so I saved the certificate for the party. It was nice to be able to feel treated to a fun salon experience, especially when I’m trying not to spend money in my current jobless situation. It’s crazy how much better a small luxury can make you feel when you’re going through something rough. Also, it’s amazing how a fun updo can transform an entire look. The DIY Express is only $65 + tip and made me look more ’60s than anything else – less than the cost of a dress!
