Sal, Kris, and Charlie’s

Knowing my love of the pub sub on beach days, my beau decided to introduce me to Sal, Kris, and Charlie’s on our way to The Rockaways. While I had never heard of them, this small Astoria shop is known far and wide as The Sandwich King. It’s a small bodega-style deli that churns out incredible Italian sandwiches.

These sandwiches are big. Like 3 people per sandwich kinda big. They’re at least 14 inches and at $12 (I’m told it was $9 a year or two ago) to get the most fully loaded one, you’re paying less than a dollar an inch. A steal. That most fully loaded sandwich is The Bomb, their most famous concoction. I can’t list out all the ingredients, but it’s basically every meat (I counted 6 meat layers), 3 cheeses, lettuce, tomato, onion, peppers, mayo, mustard, and dressing. It was so tall, I truly could not squeeze all the layers into a single bite.

The bread is soft but manages to hold strong against sogginess in the face of dressing (and it sat for about 40 minutes before we ate it). Yes, there are a lot of ingredients in there, but they’re all pretty mild so it all works together. This is a true powerhouse of a sandwich and made for the perfect beach lunch.

Note: cash only. Another note: they cater and this would be perfect for a summer party. Your guests would love you.
