Was it Instagram or The Today Show where I first heard about Janie’s Life-Changing Baked Goods? I don’t even remember. In fact, I forgot the main “story” part of this bakery’s history, which is that it was born out of Janie’s successful attempt to escape addiction and homelessness. All I remembered is that I was gifted the opportunity for a walk and some time out of the house that would take me through the UWS. When I turned to Google Maps to see what was in the area that I may want to hit up, I recognized the store’s name but didn’t remember the beautiful backstory. What I did remember was that this was the home of the pie crust cookie and I knew I had to try it.

I tried three different flavors: pineapple passionfruit, strawberry rhubarb, and pumpkin. I had to get a variety of flavor profiles, after all. Since I brought them home to eat later, I simply nuked ’em for 10 seconds before eating and they were perfect. I intended to spread them out and/or share them…but I ended up eating all three in one day. And don’t ask me to pick a favorite.

These may be the best cookies I’ve ever had (definitely tied for top three). As someone who prefers pie to cake (I’m not a frosting gal), I loved that it was like a mini pie but with a better crust to filling ratio. There’s a slight crisp that gives way to the gooey inside but it doesn’t have that overly crunchy edge of a pie crust that doesn’t touch any of the filling and always gets left on the plate. These cookies are like an entire dessert of just that perfect crust underside combined with the topping of a crumble.
