Best Dishes of 2022

My fave foods of the year

  • The Amore
    • Where I Ate It: Milano Market
    • What It Cost: $21.50 (Yes, that’s an insane amount to spend on a sandwich, but it’s also massive.)
    • Why It’s So Freakin’ Delicious: You’ve got arguably the best Italian meat and the best Italian cheese in one place. The bread is also perfect, and it holds up in delivery. I’ve tried other sandwiches on their menu (their Cubano is surprisingly good) and everything has been wonderful, but this pile of proscuitto and burrata is the sandwich that hooked me.
  • Cookies
    • Where I Ate It: Chip City and Janie’s Life-Changing Baked Goods
    • What It Cost: $4.50 and $3.00, respectively
    • Why It’s So Freakin’ Delicious: Both of these bakeries offer unique cookies. Chip City has a rotating menu with some unique seasonal flavors of huge soft [often stuffed] cookies that are extra wonderful when warmed. Janie’s pie crust cookies kinda blew my mind. They’re buttery and flavorful and offer the perfect bite of crust and filling.
  • Asian Goodies
    • Where I Ate It: Umamicart
    • What It Cost: Various
    • Why It’s So Freakin’ Delicious: Umamicart has a great selection of Asian groceries and I’ve discovered some amazing snacks and sauces through their online marketplace. It can be tough to track some of these items down, especially if you live/work in certain neighborhoods. I can find all sorts of yumminess here and get it delivered right to my door. I’ve particularly liked the salted egg yolk cookies, beef sliced extra thin for bulgogi, chili crisp, and pickled bamboo shoots.
  • Butter Tasting
    • Where I Ate It: Razza
    • What It Cost: $18
    • Why It’s So Freakin’ Delicious: It’s high end butter paired with perfectly baked bread. Swoon.
  • Salatim
    • Where I Ate It: Laser Wolf
    • What It Cost: $46-$52
    • Why It’s So Freakin’ Delicious: Perfectly spiced, pickled, and pureed tidbits served with the fluffiest of pita. If you like a snack spread, this is perfection. This is actually part of a prix fixe and comes with the grilled protein of your choice and some incredible ice cream for dessert, but those almost become the bonus. We just get them so we can get our hands on this app.
  • Smoked Meat Sandwich
    • Where I Ate It: Lester’s
    • What It Cost: $13.75 (Canadian dollars)
    • Why It’s So Freakin’ Delicious: This place could give any NY deli a run for it’s money. The meat was perfectly smoked and not too fatty. You know it’s good when it actually makes me enjoy the yellow mustard pairing – literally the only time I eat yellow mustard is on a legit deli sandwich. This made me want to try the chopped liver and other menu items but, alas, I don’t live in the country.
  • Softshell Crab
    • Where I Ate It: Common Thread
    • What It Cost: TBD (no longer on the menu because it’s seasonal, but I’m guessing around $24)
    • Why It’s So Freakin’ Delicious: One of the meatiest softshell crabs I’ve had, which was showcased by the very light tempura breading. It also meant the sauces and salads that accompanied it served to augment – not overpower – the dish.
