Mirepoix

Oh my gosh it’s finally warm this week! On Monday, I got my work done early and took advantage of the weather by doing my training run outside. It was a tough run (I had to walk the last half mile) but I didn’t mind because it was so beautiful. I did the whole thing in Central Park which means that once I reached that half mile walk, I could do some fun people watching and stroll through the Conservatory Gardens, which were in full bloom and smelled incredible. I ended by enjoying a podcast and view of the Meer from a park bench while I waited for my Alberts to meet me for some impromptu after-school playground time. And then, of course, on Tuesday when it was equally gorgeous and I even got all dressed with hair and makeup…I stayed inside all day. That is until 5pm when I slapped some sense into myself and forced myself to do a quick walk around the block.

When you’re from Georgia, The Masters is a cause for celebration, even if you’re not attending the tournament yourself. We may have been all the way in NYC, but I made sure I prepared a Masters-worthy lunch of pimento cheese and egg salad sandwiches with some chips. (Side note: the chips are camembert flavor from a local French shop and are incredible.) The sandwiches absolutely must be served on mushy white bread, and I have to toot my own horn because my version is pretty legit. Finn loved it. (He also tried lemonade for the first time this weekend and REALLY loved that.)

I always think of milestones as the typical moments: first steps, first solid food, potty training, first day of school. But lately we’ve been enjoying what feels like momentous occasions, even if they’re a bit more lowkey. We recently had our first continuous activity (soccer), Finn picked out an outfit himself, and now I’ve gotten to see him in the big kid swings for the first time.True, he was probably “ready” for some of these earlier, but I just never organized things. In some ways these smaller daily life milestones feel bigger than the big ones – it’s in these moments that I’m able to look around and truly see my child becoming a person and not just a responsibility.

With work currently a bit slow, I have the luxury of popping out for an errand or workout class. I don’t leave for long (it’s basically a lunch break, but since I WFH I don’t use it for lunch) and make sure I’m fully connected should anything come up. On Friday, I was on the waitlist for an in-studio Peloton class. Turns out, everyone showed up so I didn’t get to join the class but decided to take advantage of the fact that I had left the apartment on a sunny day. I took my beau’s advice and stopped into a coffee shop for an afternoon pick-me-up and a short break with my book. It was lovely. When you work from home, it’s easy to forget to take breaks and this was a nice reminder that I not only can but should step away from the laptop for a bit.
