Mirepoix

Aaaand we’re back! This is Finn’s first week back at school and my first full week back at the office. This year, because of how the holidays fell, it felt like a true break. Sure, it was tough entertaining a toddler for two full weeks, but it was also a true rest for all of us – a much needed one, I think.

I’ve never felt more Southern than I did on New Year’s Day when I made a meal of pork, collards, and hoppin John. I love how I hold on fiercely to traditions from home, if I do say so myself. (I was also sure to wave my money at the moon, fyi.) If I’m being honest, it was much easier to prepare the meal this year because I was 0% hungover. We did absolutely nothing to ring in the new year. I suppose that’s just what happens when you have a young kid, but in the past we’ve stretched monitors and partied with neighbors. This year, truly nobody I knew was doing anything so we followed suit and stayed in with a fab meat and cheese spread. Some nights you’re just not feelin it and this was one of those nights. I read a book, kissed at midnight, and snuggled on the couch with my lil fam – it was [surprisingly] quite lovely.

Coffee and a vintage French comic book – kinda sums up my break. We spent a lot of time in bookstores and I got not one but THREE coffee gifts, alongside a new book subscription box. (There was also some great tinned fish – trying to think less about how predictable I am and more about how well the people in my life know me.)

It was not easy to fill the seemingly endless time before school started. We went ice skating twice, played a lot of Candyland, and checked out the Museum of Illusions. When I started running out of ideas but didn’t want to resort to tv, I broke out the crafts (thank you, Mondo Llama from Target!). Something had to replace the wreath!
