Sometimes I think there’s a place you’ve just got to know about and my Public Service Announcements (PSAs) will give you the full skinny.
Soon after moving to NYC, I discovered the Housing Works thrift shop. With 14 locations, it’s hard not to discover them! Here’s the great thing about Housing Works: they aim to end homelessness and AIDS through advocacy and supportive services like healthcare. The profits from the business they run, such as these thrift shops, feed into the funding for this mission.
While I had been to several of their thrift shops, I had never actually been to the flagship location, which includes a bookstore and cafe. When I received an email about their Fridays in February event called Booze, Books, and Board Games, I said “sign me up!” Are you kidding?! Those are three of my favorite things!
It’s not a structured event, but from 6pm til close (9pm), they have drink specials, a fire projected onto the wall, and board games. I had a glass of glogg (mulled wine), Albert had a beer, and we played an intense game of Scrabble. It was a relaxing way to kick off the weekend. Sure, there was alcohol involved, but it was by no means necessary. It was a great way to get out of the house and do something on a weekend evening that wasn’t a rager of a party, nor was it a movie (the de facto go-to for non-party activities).
Definitely check this out if you’re looking to support a good cause and do something fun on a Friday this month. And in case you’re wondering, I won at Scrabble.
