I long ago read of Bonnie Slotnick’s on lists of the best bookstores in the city. But this isn’t just any bookstore. It’s a bookstore stocked entirely with cookbooks. This is the kind of store you wander and peruse with wonder.
There are cookbooks crammed into every nook and cranny of this tiny basement level shop. She may not have everything, but this store carries something from pretty much every single category of cooking. There are cookbooks by region or style. There are cookbooks still in print. There are vintage cookbooks. If you want to cook something – anything – this shop will steer you in the right direction.
I thought many of the cookbooks were donated, but since originally posting this, I heard from Bonnie herself (!), who confirmed she buys each book herself. Because most are purchased “from people who are winnowing or selling their own books,” you can often find some fun notes and inscriptions in them. These cookbooks were loved in their former lives.
I picked up two great vintage cookbooks from the Lowcountry and can’t wait to test out the recipes. A store devoted solely to cookbooks is not something I realized I needed…but I kinda really do.
