The ramen burger debuted at Smorgasburg two years ago and was a HIT. I didn’t even attempt to get one because I never felt like waiting an hour in the August heat, fighting off a bad case of boob sweat. But now that there are more Smorgasburg locations and the hysteria has subsided, it’s not so tough to try it.
The ramen burger is a beef patty with a sweet shoyu glaze and arugula, sandwiched between a bun made of ramen. Somehow, the ramen bun manages to stay in tact so you get the full ramen burger experience in every bite. I ordered mine with cheese for an extra $1, but it was unnecessary and kind of got lost. This is one of those things that sounds too strange. It does, in fact, work and manages not to feel like too much of a novelty.
I also very much enjoyed my small cup of yuzu slaw on the side. The only thing I didn’t enjoy was the service. The women working the stand were less than friendly and had no idea how to efficiently operate the line. There was only one person ahead of me so I should have gotten my ramen burger pretty much immediately. Unfortunately, I waited for quite some time because it seemed they forgot about my burger patty on the grill (which means it got a little overdone – still edible, but not my preference). Once cooked, they let the burgers sit to the side for at least 10 minutes while they took more orders. It looked like they were trying to wait until they amassed 7 completed ramen burgers so they could hand them all out at once, but that means several burgers were just sitting there for a while. Hopefully, they realize there are better ways to serve those babies because I’d like to have another.
