Reading List: New Year New Reads

  • Now that it’s a new year, many of you are probably ready to expand your literary horizons. Here are my picks, based on popular New Years resolutions.
    • For the Girl Who’s Hot Stuff (and Knows It): Throne of Glass is the first in a YA series featuring a badass heroine. Celaena Sardothian is deadly – and has spent the last few years in prison because of it. The prince releases her on the condition she competes against the rest of the world’s top assassins to find the king’s champion. But as weeks pass in the palace, Sardothian realizes there is something sinister and other-worldly lurking. Sardothian is a tough chick, so this is great for someone who’s resolution is to work out and get in stuff-strutting shape.
    • For the Passionate Home Chef: I loved Ruth Reichl’s memoir, Garlic and Sapphires, when I read it years ago. I don’t know why it took me so long to read Tender at the Bone, her retrospective about discovering her love for good food (which ultimately led to her jobs NY Times food critic and Gourmet editor. Great the the person who vows to cook at home more.
    • For the Person Who Lives by the “New Year New You” Mantra: Mark Lukach’s memoir of handling – as a family – his wife’s psychotic break(s) will give you a “love conquers all” feeling. When I finished it, I told myself I would approach life with a positive attitude because if they can get through this, I can get through anything.
