Let’s start with the most important part of this review: Hey Ladies!: The Story of 8 Best Friends, 1 Year, and Way, Way Too Many Emails is the funniest book I’ve read in a long time. Bravo to Michelle Markowitz and Caroline Moss who have perfectly captured how laughably insane it is to be a woman in your 20s/30s.
Basically, Markowitz and Moss noticed a trend. Their inboxes were flooded with group emails that all began “Hey Ladies!” Sound familiar? I can at least admit I’m guilty of starting emails this way. They also notice how ridiculous these emails can get. From over the top bridesmaid requests we’ve all seen before to endless back and forth brunch scheduling, it’s all there. I felt like I was watching my own friend group interact over email.
You’ll recognize all your friends: the one who’s watching her pennies (unless, of course she just must unnecessarily spend money on herself for a new dress), the one who nobody wants to visit because she lives in an outer borough, the one who’s obsessed with her boyfriend/finding a boyfriend, the one who always sits this one out, the one who takes charge unasked and then forces everyone to pay for things she plans without their consent….does all this sound familiar? If it doesn’t, I honestly would like to hear what life is like for you. I can name a personal friend who corresponds to each of the characters in this book.
This book is so relatable, so current. If you’re a girl and want to laugh, read it. If you’re a dude and want to roll your eyes, read it, because this will confirm everything you assume about girls and how crazy you think we are. I hate to admit, it’s all kinda true.
5 out of 5 stars.
